USD 373 Anti-Bullying Group Brings In Speaker For Free Community Event
Posted 1/10/19

Newton (Kan.) The USD 373 Anti-Bullying Task Force is bringing Youth Motivational Speaker Josh Drean to talk with Santa Fe 5/6 Center and Chisholm Middle School on February 14. He will also host a free evening session for members of the community at 6:30 p.m. at Newton High School auditorium. Drean uses a positive approach to dealing with bullying and teaches important social and emotional skills.

“When we were reviewing speakers, we thought Josh had the right energy for our target audience of middle school students,” Anti-Bullying Task Force Member Jason Chalashtari said. “We liked his focus of being positive when combating bullying.”

The Anti-Bullying task force consists of teachers, social workers, school resource officers, administrators and other educators. This year they’ve hosted a “Newton Be Nice” event, published information on identifying and dealing with bullying and purchased books for social workers for social skill groups. This presentation is one part of the group’s goal of addressing bullying in the district.

“Any time you can send a positive message of students treating each other with kindness and respect, it’s a big win,” Chalashtari said. “A presentation isn’t going to completely change a culture, but it is part of a solution. We are trying to give as many resources as possible to our students and the community.”

The time of the special community presentation is not set. It will be in the evening and free for the public.

The Newton Rotary Club’s Birdies Against Bullying Anti-Bullying Golf Tournament funds the Drean visit.
